Tuscaloosa's Central High Names New Leader: Dr. Thomas E. Jones Takes the Helm

Dr. Thomas E. Jones has been appointed as the new principal of Central High School after receiving approval from the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education at their meeting on May 6th.
Tuscaloosa City Schools mentioned that Jones has more than three decades of experience in public education and will take up his position in June to get ready for the 2025-26 academic year.

“I feel thrilled, privileged, and deeply appreciative to become part of Tuscaloosa City Schools, an institution dedicated to both excellence and fairness,” Jones stated. “I genuinely appreciate Dr. Mike Daria and the Tuscaloosa City Schools Board of Education for giving me the chance to lead Central High School as its new principal. This duty is one I approach with utmost seriousness, and I look forward to aiding in the continued prosperity of this exceptional educational environment. Today marks a wonderful day to embrace being a Falcon.”
Previously, he has held principal positions at R.A. Hubbard High School in Courtland, Lawrence County High School in Moulton, and most recently, at Columbia High School in Huntsville.
Jones highlighted his dedication to acquiring knowledge and fostering connections within the school community.
“One of my key early tasks is to fully embrace what makes Central special, including its traditions, pride, and cultural aspects,” he stated. “In my view, effective leadership starts with listening and understanding, so I’ll strive hard to gain the confidence of this community via genuine connections and open actions.”
Jones has earned a doctoral degree in education from Samford University, an educational specialist degree along with a master’s in education from Alabama A&M University, and a bachelor’s degree in human resources from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He serves as a member of the UAH Alumni Relations Board and was honored with induction into the university’s hall of fame. Additionally, he is recognized as a CLAS Certified Instructional Leader.
As the principal, my aim is to listen, learn, and lead with honesty and foresight,” he stated. “We will collaborate to create an environment where we hold ourselves to high standards, maintain consistency, and provide support—focusing on enhancing academic performance, boosting regular school attendance, and fostering stronger connections between faculty, pupils, and parents.”
Superintendent Mike Daria commended Jones for her leadership experience and commitment to student achievement.

He has received top endorsements from the present superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, Dr. Clarence Sutton—who previously excelled as the principal at Central High School," Daria stated. "Committed to fostering robust connections and achieving success centered around students, we believe Dr. Jones will aid us in maintaining our advancement and upholding high standards for everyone.
