Screenwriter Unveiled: Thunderbolts Character's Shocking Fate Revealed in Film

The marketing for Thunderbolts* displayed numerous characters from earlier MCU projects as part of the lineup. Besides Bucky Barnes, there were characters from Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and most prominently, three characters from Black Widow . But one of those characters, Antonia Dreykov, aka Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), did not last long In the film, she actually gets killed by Ghost quite early in the first act. However, through Polygon , we have discovered that the initial Thunderbolts* Screenwriter Eric Pearson initially envisioned a more extensive storyline for her character. She also survived until the conclusion of the film. Here’s his statement:
After completing my work, when I finally got to view the initial version, one aspect stood out entirely differently and left me completely stunned—and that pertained to this particular element. As for everything else, I felt, “Yes, this matches the script I penned!” However, regarding that choice... you'd probably need to consult director Jake Schreier, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, or perhaps co-screenwriter Joanna Calo. If I had to speculate though, they likely made it intending to elicit a similar response from viewers—a sense of shock with the introduction of heightened tension through dramatic action right away, keeping everyone on their toes.
Pearson further mentioned that Taskmaster included an extensive subplot in his version, where he specifically highlighted the connection between her character and Ava/Ghost. Pearson noted that this character brought comedic elements into the movie because despite having a profoundly sorrowful past, she would frequently draw attention to the team’s excessive self-pity. Additionally, there was a recurring joke about how Taskmaster continually forgot that she wasn’t required to take lethal actions. U.S. Agent/John Walker Pearson mentioned, "She was dealing with her own issues regarding memory loss. There was also a humorous bit where she repeatedly restarted their conflict and forgot that they had reconciled and become friends." Indeed, we must acknowledge that witnessing this unfold would have been quite amusing.
Was it a mistake to cut all that Taskmaster stuff out? Hard to say. Thunderbolts* has a pretty tight script with a lot of characters to service And it manages this quite effectively. Including another segment for the complete movie could have made it overly complex and added an extra character arc, which would have increased the runtime as well. Despite this, it's astonishing that the official screenwriter wasn't aware of these details until they watched the finished product. Marvel Studios, you certainly enjoy keeping your cards close to your chest. It appears even your writers aren't exempt from being kept in the dark.
