Cumberland Borough Welcomes New Police Chief

Following over six years of leadership at the Gettysburg Police Department under Robert Glenny Jr., the Mechanicsburg Borough Council members unanimously decided on Tuesday evening to appoint him as the new police chief.

Glenny will replace Margaret Myers, 65, who has served as the Mechanicsburg Police chief since 2015 Glenny’s swearing-in ceremony will occur during the initial borough council meeting of June.

Glenny, who has more than 35 years of experience in law enforcement, started his career in 1988 with the Ferguson Township Police Department in Centre County, where he served for over 26 years. Then, he worked as the chief of police in Leadville, Colorado, from June 2016 to March 2019 before accepting the position in Gettysburg.

“The new role was beneficial—I think—for my career. Having had the opportunity to serve the residents of Gettysburg has truly been an incredible privilege. Many refer to this place as the most renowned small town globally, and I agree with them,” stated Glenny following Tuesday’s meeting conclusion.

Glenny mentioned that the interaction between the Mechanicsburg Police Department and the local residents was particularly impressive.

“That’s one of the things that is very, very attractive about coming to Mechanicsburg,” Glenny said. “There’s a good group, a core group of officers here. It seems to me, from the research I’ve done, both inside the law enforcement community and outside, that the officers get along well with their community here. The community likes them, they’re involved in the community. We want to continue that. And from the law enforcement perspective, it’s a well-respected agency.”

Glenny told PennLive that he and his wife plan to move to Cumberland County, as they both have jobs in the Mechanicsburg area now.

I'm excited about starting up here and beginning this journey," Glenny stated. "This represents another chapter for me, and being chosen feels like a great honor.

Glenny’s yearly salary was set at $121,000 during the meeting on Tuesday.

Myers earned over $105,000 per year in salary as the police chief, which was adjusted downward when she transitioned into a civilian role in 2022 without retaining her law enforcement certification.

In total, Myers has worked at the Mechanicsburg Police Department for 40 years. In 1984, she became the borough’s first female police officer, but she was also enrolled in the department’s junior cadet program as a teenager.

The vote on Tuesday was proposed by Borough Council Vice President John Anthony and supported by Council Member Ron O'Neil.

The board approved Glenny’s hiring without making any remarks.

The president of the Mechanicsburg Borough Council, Kyle L. Miller, along with Anthony, expressed their gratitude to Myers for her contributions before officially greeting Glenny as he assumed his new role.
