Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Under Audit as Budget Shortfall Looms

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District is currently being audited by the state auditor’s office due to a projected $24 million deficit spanning from this academic year to the following one.

Dave Boliek, the State Auditor, shared a copy of a letter addressed to Superintendent Tricia McManus on April 21. This was just one day prior to her announcement about retiring. The correspondence specifies that the audit will concentrate on examining the school district’s fiscal documents and dealings, such as salary payments and expenditures related to federal subsidies.

On Monday, it came to light that both the North Carolina State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction dispatched an individual letter to the district. This communication requested a comprehensive account of the measures implemented to tackle the financial problems at hand.

The district has been granted until May 15 to present that plan to the state, otherwise facing penalties. The educational system has already enforced several expense-reducing actions and intends to introduce additional ones for the upcoming fiscal year.
