Who Will Be Crowned This Week’s Driscoll Children's Hospital High School Athlete of the Year?

Athletes from the Corpus Christi area excelled at the UIL State competition, with multiple standout performers being named finalists for the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week award for April 28–May 3.

Each Tuesday, The Caller-Times will unveil a roster of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week based on the weekly nominations they receive.

All students participating in collegiate athletics are eligible for this honor. Each athlete may receive the Athlete of the Week title just once within each specific season and sport. Additionally, student-athletes from the same institution cannot secure this recognition for more than three successive weeks.

The polling will conclude on Thursday with the winners being revealed on Friday of every week.

Carlie McClain from Refugio was involved in setting two Class 2A UIL State Track Meet records. (200-meter dash and 4x100 relay) aiding the Bobcats to secure second place in the overall team rankings.

At the Class 3A UIL State Track Meet, Banquete's Blas Villarreal won medals in both the boys' high jump and long jump events.

This Week's Finalists

• Hannah Creekmore, Rockport-Fulton Girls Golf Team — Creekmore carded scores of 74 and 78 for a total of 152, which placed him in a tie for sixth position in Class 4A at the UIL State Golf Tournament.

• Carlie McClain, Refugio girls track & field — At the Class 2A UIL State Track Meet, McClain secured three medals by claiming gold and breaking state meet records in both the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.04 seconds, and as part of Refugio’s victorious 800-meter relay team clocking in at 1:41.28. Additionally, they took home silver in the 100-meter sprint with a finish of 11.90 seconds.

• Jayden McCoy, from the Tuloso-Midway boys track & field team — McCoy claimed victory in the Class 4A boys long jump with a jump of Of 24-6½ at the UIL State Track Meet.

• Charly Renteria, Golf for Girls in London — Renteria carded scores of 86 and 75 for a total of 161, securing fifth placeOverall in Class 3A at the UIL State Golf Tournament.

• Jasiah Rivera, from the Kingsville Boys Track & Field team — Rivera concluded his career with a silver medal. In Class 4A, they secured first place in the 300-meter hurdles and took home a bronze medal in the 110-meter event at the UIL State Track Meet.

• Ella Srubar, Orange Grove Softball — Srubar went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and six RBIs during the Bulldogs' Game 1 victory over Raymondville, and he was intentionally walked four times in Game 2 as Orange Grove completed the sweep of the district playoffs.

• Tom Su, Veterans Memorial boys tennis — Su, a first-year student, claimed the championship in the District 29-5A boys singles competition.

• Blas Villarreal, Boys Track & Field at Banquete High School — At the UIL State Track Meet, Villarreal secured second place in the Class 3A high jump with a leap of 6-7 and took third position in the long jump with a distance of 23-2¼.
