UNC Basketball Targets International Guard

North Carolina's recruitment path is heading overseas as they focus on a Russian guard. Ivan Kharchenkov , who is participating in Germany. The combination guard is part of FC Bayern Munich’s basketball squad.

Having spent his formative years within the Bayern Munich system at the youth level, he progressed from the reserve squad to the senior team in 2023.

Hubert Davis still has multiple openings left for players on his team. These slots might end up being taken by promising 18-year-olds competing among top-tier global talents eyed by the NBA. Given that the UNC guard lineup hasn’t received much attention besides a handful of transfer students and new recruits, Kharchenkov stands out as someone who could quickly fill one of these positions and potentially make a significant difference.

Over the weekend, Kharchenkov dropped 17 points with five rebounds and four steals.

There has been no shortage of international achievements among athletes competing in the NCAA. Forward Vladislav Goldin represents Michigan and originates from Russia, just like BYU’s player Egor Demin. Freshman Kasparas Jakucionis at Illinois also traces his roots back to Lithuania, whereas Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones hails from New Zealand originally.

The departures of RJ Davis , Ian Jackson and Drake Powell created significant gaps in North Carolina’s offensive lineup, particularly on the wings, where Kharchenkov excels. While there is much room for improvement in his overall play, the potential he offers to Coach Hubert Davis might outweigh his lack of experience.
