Travelers Without REAL ID May Face Extra TSA Screenings at GSP Airport

Greer, S.C. (WSPA)— Officials at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) are alerting passengers about potential issues they might encounter if they do not have a REAL ID.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) reports that the REAL ID Act was enacted by Congress in 2005. According to officials, this legislation sets forth minimal security requirements for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards intended for use in federal capacities.

A representative stated that the security protocols at GSP will mostly stay the same for travelers. However, individuals arriving at the airport without a REAL ID might face occasional extra screenings when passing through the TSA checkpoint.

GSP stated that 63% of residents in South Carolina already possess a REAL ID. more than 80% It is estimated that about one out of every air travelers has one.

How can I tell if my ID is a REAL ID?

If there is a star on your license or state identification card , you have a REAL ID-compliant card. The star may be black or gold, completely filled in or just the outline. Either way, you’re compliant.

New security procedure at GSP

Starting Wednesday, passengers will move through the standard screening line or TSA PreCheck.

While at the document check station, officers with TSA will determine if identification is REAL ID compliant and if the passenger has been picked for additional security screenings.
