If your appetite leans towards the perfect Aussie meat pie, then look no further. Sydney chef says there's one place that never fails to deliver - and it's on a main road in a beachside suburb.
Celebrated chef Toby Wilson, known for restaurants like Taco King and Ricos Tacos, confessed that his favorite place for a midday meal is The Upper Crust, an unpretentious pie shop located on Pittwater Road that has catered to local tastes for many years.
The chicken and white wine pie is definitely the way to go," Wilson stated to Broadsheet, referring to the store as his "childhood pie destination.
He is far from being the only person consumed by this obsession.
Situated at 1003 Pittwater Road in Collaroy, The Upper Crust has turned into a must-visit destination for pie enthusiasts throughout Sydney—often drawing long lines daily and devoted patrons who call it "the finest pie shop in the entire city."
The menu features a delightful array of both traditional dishes and creative variations: steak with potatoes and cheese; peppered steak; chicken topped with avocado and brie; beef cooked in burgundy wine; lamb seasoned with rosemary; plus, an excitingly spicy Mexican-inspired pie for those seeking something bold.
There are family-sized pies, party pies, sausage rolls, and even excellent coffee for the full lunch hit.
The reviews are exceptionally positive – and frequently lyrical.

'Just as in Greek mythology the song of the mermaids attracted sailors, the mouth-watering scent of freshly baked pie crust draws you in irresistibly,' one fan wrote.
Another reviewer confessed they're not usually a fan of pies but were completely converted: 'The minced steak and Mexican pies were beyond expectations... the guy next to me told his mates 'hands down the best pie I've had in my life' - and I have to agree.'
A loyal patron once stated: "I traversed from Dee Why through the shark-filled lagoon and returned simply to purchase my pies. It is invariably worthwhile."
Other customers commended the 'welcoming and attentive team' and mentioned that the crust is what keeps drawing people back—the demand being so high that certain dishes often sell out quickly during busy times.
There's a small outdoor seating area, and one customer even received a complimentary mince pie with their order.
With chefs, locals, and foodies united in praise, The Upper Crust might just be Sydney's most legendary pie stop - and worth the trip no matter where you're coming from.
