Student Shot While Walking to School in Bassett Unified District
On Tuesday morning, May 6, a teenager en route to school was shot and wounded by an assailant with a weapon who was inside a vehicle, according to officials in Bassett.
A second boy who was walking alongside the teenager did not get hurt.
Alejandro Alvarez, who oversees operations at Bassett Unified School District, stated that both teenagers involved are high school students within the district. However, he chose not to disclose their ages or specify which schools they go to.
The Bassett Unified district includes two high schools: Bassett High School located at 755 N. Ardilla Avenue, and Nueva Vista High, a continuation school situated at 904 N. Willow Avenue.
The incident occurred on Amar Road between Millbury and Puente avenues at approximately 9:45 a.m., according to Sheriff Sergeant Brent Del Valle. He thinks the age of the teenager who was shot is likely 17 years old.
As the teenager walked alongside another person on Amar Road heading toward Puente Avenue, a vehicle pulled beside them and an individual inside the sedan started shooting, as per Del Valle’s statement. The bullet struck the teenager in the upper body, he added.
According to Del Valle, two suspects, identified merely as a man and a woman, were inside the vehicle. He also mentioned that the car was last observed traveling southbound on Puente Avenue.
Staff at a local hospital called the sheriff’s Industry station about a gunshot victim about 30 minutes later, Del Valle said. The wounded teen was hospitalized in stable condition, the sgt. said.
"My understanding is that he will be returning home tomorrow," Alvarez stated.
The Bassett Unified district informed parents through texts and email notifications, he mentioned.
According to the superintendent, the district has implemented security measures and requested additional support from the sheriff’s department for the upcoming few days.
"We aren't expecting any problems, but we're taking precautions," Alvarez stated.
Both boys are students at Bassett Unified School District.
