SDSU Baseball Stays Hot With Impressive 10-2 Victory

BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — Dylan Richey threw five scoreless innings, and South Dakota State mounted their second six-run frame of the series, leading to a 10-2 victory that clinched the series against Northern Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

In winning the series two games to one, the Jackrabbits improved to 14-29 overall and 10-13 in The Summit League. UNC fell to 17-28 and 8-16 in league play.

After playing from behind in each of the first two games of the series, it was SDSU that got out to an early lead on Sunday. Nolan Grawe initiated a two-run rally with a double into the left-center field, advanced to third on a single by Bryce Ronken and scored on a sacrifice fly by Owen Siegert Ronken subsequently scored from a hit-single. The Jackrabbit led extended to 4-0 with solo scores in the third and fourth innings. Carter Sintek he continued his impressive batting with a homerun to start the bottom of the third inning. Jess Bellows multiplied and crossed home plate due to a hit by the player Keagen Jirschele an inning later.

Richey, who was participating in his inaugural Summit League match, performed efficiently during his most extended appearance with the Jackrabbits. The right-handed pitcher required just 57 pitches to finish five innings, conceding merely three hits and issuing one walk.

UNC ended a streak of 13 consecutive scoreless innings with a run against Jackrabbit reliever Alex Clemons in the sixth inning. Carter Monda led off with a single and moved up on two wild pitches before scoring on Jake King’s single through the right side. King, along with Ethan Mooser and Anthony Stellato, collected two of the Bears’ seven hits.

San Diego State University eliminated any chance of a rally from the Bears by scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following a leadoff walk, Nicholas Werk And when Sintek had a hit, placing runners at the corners, Grawe smacked a hard ground ball right back to second base which was caught, however, the subsequent throw from the shortstop intended for starting a double play went awry, enabling both Werk and Sintek to cross home plate. Following this, Ronken stepped up and delivered an RBI double, after which Siegert contributed a run-scoring single. Finally, Benes hammered a two-run homer beyond the outfield wall in the left-center region.

Tristan Augedahl pitched two shutout innings before UNC scored an unearned run in the ninth.

Sintek went 3-for-5, leading SDSU's 13-hit performance and falling just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Ronken, Siegert, and Benes each contributed two hits, while eight different players registered at least one hit apiece.

The Jackrabbits head to Omaha for a three-game weekend series starting May 9th through May 11th. The opening game of the series is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time at Tal Anderson Field on Friday.
