Oscar Piastri Claims Victory in Miami Grand Prix, Securing His Season's Fourth Win

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — In Sunday’s Formula One CRYPTO.com Miami Grand Prix, McLaren Racing driver Oscar Piastri secured his best result yet this season with his fourth win, advancing from a starting position of fourth place to take the lead by lap 15. He maintained his advantage until the end, finishing ahead of his teammate Lando Norris—who won the 2024 edition of the Miami race—by 4.630 seconds.

The overcast conditions and constant possibility of rain during what’s usually a bright and sunny May in South Florida did not diminish the intensity of the race or the enthusiasm of the spectators. On lap 15 of the 57-lap event held at the Miami International Autodrome, Piastri managed to take the lead away from pole-sitter and two-time Miami champion Max Verstappen. Following several position swaps within just three laps, Norris also passed Verstappen and went on to pursue his teammate, eventually securing the runner-up spot.

George Russell from Mercedes AMG secured third place to round out the Miami podium finish, overtaking Verstappen through a strategic pit stop maneuver on lap 27, then successfully defending his position against the current four-time world champion for the rest of the race.

"At the end of the race when you have to keep Max behind you, it's never easy," Russell conceded.

Piastri’s win — marking his sixth triumph in his career — signifies the first occasion in 28 years that a McLaren Racing driver has secured three successive victories; this feat was previously accomplished by two-time world champion Mika Häkkinen during the 1997–1998 seasons. Crucially, Piastri increased his championship advantage to 16 points over Norris as they look ahead to the upcoming race from May 16-18 at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Italy.

"To come away with a win Sunday is an impressive result," Piastri said, noting his runner-up in Saturday's sprint race. "Once I knew we had a good pace and advantage, the car's pace was incredible today."

McLaren secures the distinction of being the inaugural team to achieve a 1-2 finish during both a sprint race and a grand prix event over one weekend. Team leader American Zak Brown took to social media to honor his pair of young talents, aged just 24, posting a selfie alongside them as they exited their vehicles at the pit lane’s edge.

The competition was intense from start to finish—sometimes even featuring tough battles between teammates. Throughout the final stages, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton swapped places multiple times before eventually crossing the line in seventh and eighth respectively. In an impressive turnaround for Williams Racing, drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz managed to score 17 points on Sunday alone; this surpassed their cumulative tally of just 14 points over the whole 2024 campaign. Albon secured his best result of the year with a fifth-place finish, followed closely by Sainz in ninth position.
