Nebraska's Heartbreak: Creighton Claims Series Finale 8-7
In a close game on Tuesday night at Haymarket Park, Nebraska (24-25, 11-13) lost with a score of 8-7 to Creighton (32-13, 12-3), failing during a thrilling late-inning rally and giving up the edge in their matchups for the season.
The Huskers fell behind early, down 6-0 after only four innings. In the third inning, Creighton’s leadoff batter Ben North contributed significantly with a timely two-out, two-run single through the center of the field, breaking the deadlock. The next frame saw Creighton extend their advantage by adding another four runs without securing additional hits; they managed this thanks to three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a critical throwing mistake made by Nebraska’s pitcher Ryan Harrahill when he had runners at every base.

Nebraska narrowed the gap, thanks to a solo homer from Joshua Overbeek towards right-center field. This was soon followed by Gabe Swanson adding another solo shot, contributing to his multiple hits performance for the evening. As a result, the Huskers fought their way back to trail 6-4 as they headed into the final inning.
Creighton delivers knockout blow in ninth
In the top of the ninth, the Bluejays responded, beginning with a double along the left-field line courtesy of Nolan Sailors. The next batter, Ben North, hit a routine fly ball to right field; however, Robby Bollin misplayed it, losing sight of it against the stadium lights. Despite senior right-handed pitcher Drew Christo recording a popup for the initial out, Matt Schermann sealed their victory with an RBI single through the center, pushing Creighton’s advantage to 8-4.
Nebraska did not back down easily. Dylan Carey got on base due to an error, which was quickly followed by hits from Overbeek, Casey Sanderson, and Riley Silva, filling the bases without recording an out. A pinch-hit walk by Devin Nunez narrowed the gap to 8-6, putting the potential equalizing run at second base. Then, Bollin contributed a sacrifice fly to center field, reducing the lead to 8-7 as Silva advanced to third.
The Huskers had the potential equalizing run 90 feet away with merely one batter left, but Cayden Brumbaugh and Gabe Swansen both struck out, ensuring victory for Creighton and halting Nebraska’s comeback attempt.
Overbeek topped the Huskers' stats with a three-hit game, highlighted by his solo home run. Swanson contributed with two hits and another home run, yet their efforts were insufficient to recover from initial errors.
Nebraska will return to Haymarket Park this weekend for an important home series against Michigan, which marks their last home stand of the season.
