Jackson Ward Candidates Vie for City Council Seat

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV Two challengers are vying against current Councilman Ashby Foote (I) for the Ward 1 position on the Jackson City Council.

Foote is listed among the candidates, alongside Grace Greene (I) and Jasmine Barnes (D). The current officeholder mentioned that he has acquired significant experience during his decade-long tenure as a council member.

"We've still got quite a bit of work ahead of us. We have seen improvements in certain sectors. However, I believe there's potential to truly advance Jackson and alter the course of the city," he stated.

Green was raised in Jackson. Her family has run a business in the state capital for over three decades. She believes her experiences will assist in attracting new residents and tackling various challenges.

"Just having the ability to draw in businesses, getting innovative with tackling crime, examining ways to decrease criminal activities, considering strategies such as community policing, and collaborating with Homeowners Associations," Greene stated.

Barnes is a certified public accountant and an auditor, roles she thinks will be instrumental in leading a productive team. She emphasized that concentrating on the city’s financial matters could restore confidence.

"Since the financial framework needs to be robust and this aspect falls under the city’s jurisdiction, Jackson has numerous internal measures at their disposal to enhance trustworthiness and bolster the city’s position. Therefore, both the mayor and the City Council share an equally important role in achieving these goals," Barnes stated.

The general election has been scheduled for June 3, 2025.
