Giants Bounce Back: From Blown Lead to 9-Run Rally in the 11th, Toppling Cubs

Jung Hoo Lee belted a two-run homer in the third inning and added an RBI single during a nine-run 11th, lifting the visiting San Francisco Giants to a 14-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

Matt Chapman added a two-run single in the 11th to join Lee with a three-hit performance. Heliot Ramos had four hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Giants, who squandered a two-run lead in the ninth inning.

San Francisco, however, ignited the fireworks in the 11th.

Patrick Bailey’s hit to center field off Ryan Pressly (2-2) brought home Christian Koss, and Brett Wisley’s sacrifice bunt allowed Ramos to cross the plate, giving San Francisco a 7-5 advantage. Pressly then issued a walk followed by hitting Willy Adams with a pitch, which scored an additional run.

Hits from Lee, Chapman, and Wilmer Flores increased the Giants' lead to 12-5. The scoring was completed with Ramos' run-scoring double and Bailey's sacrificial fly off of Pressly, who conceded nine runs (eight earned) across five hits without recording an out.

Erik Miller (2-0) surrendered only one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings, despite giving up a game-tying RBI single to Kyle Tucker with two outs in the ninth frame.

The Giants exploded with 16 hits leading up to securing their fourth victory in their past five matches.

Justin Verlander signed a one-year deal worth $15 million and pitched impressively, giving up only three runs on five hits over five innings, putting himself in position for his first victory of the year. However, Ryan Walker walked twice and gave up an RBI single to Justin Turner in the ninth inning. After that, Miller yielded another RBI single to Tucker.

Miguel Amaya from Chicago hit a two-run home run in the third inning, and Jon Berti contributed with an RBI single in the fifth.

San Francisco scratched in a pair of runs in the second inning before doubling their advantage in the third, courtesy of Lee depositing a 2-1 fastball from Colin Rea over the wall in right field. Lee's homer was his fourth of the season and first since he went deep on two occasions against the New York Yankees on April 13.

Chicago cut their deficit in half with Amaya's third home run of the season before both sides exchanged runs.
