Georgetown County Teacher Finds Innovative Activities to Boost Motor Skills

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - An elementary school educator in Georgetown County emphasizes that allowing students to engage with various materials is crucial for developing cognitive motor skills applicable across their lifetime.
Becca Williams, who is a first-year Special Education teacher at Sampit Elementary School, wants to gain more hands-on activities for her students.
“As soon as I walked into Sandpit, I immediately felt welcomed like I’ve known my co-workers for months, if not years,” Williams says.
Considering her students as part of her family, she mentions that she constantly seeks innovative methods to make their learning experiences more enjoyable.
“I have two different classes. I have a morning pre-K and an afternoon pre-K. They both have give or take 10 kids in them. Disabilities range from mild to moderate for the most part, some are nonverbal, some are verbal,” she says. “That way we have different modalities in the classroom to be able to communicate with them as well.”
When her pupils encounter art, puzzles, and interactive books, she notes that these materials enable them to delve into various ideas in an intriguing manner, emphasizing the enhancement of their cognitive abilities, critical reasoning, and precise motor skill growth.
It helps strengthen their fingers," explains Williams. "By the end of the year, they manage to hold pens and paper effectively and succeed at tracing lines, letters, or numbers as needed." She adds, "This applies particularly to many non-verbal children who also benefit from various fine motor activities where they can actively take part.
She mentions that she is seeking additional such activities to provide her students with chances to engage with various materials and delve into fresh concepts in an enjoyable yet instructive manner.
“She mentions that they also have a train set donated through DonorsChoose," explains someone. "The number of children keeps increasing, so she decided to restock supplies for this purpose since it effectively brings the kids together. This allows them to construct various structures such as houses or schools based on where their imaginations lead them."
