E.T.'s Unexpected Love Story: The Adorable Alien's Sweet Romance

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial remains an almost flawless movie decades after its theatrical release. However, there was nearly an additional storyline that would have significantly altered portions of the film’s atmosphere. This subplot entailed a possible romantic relationship involving the lovable alien And... Elliott's mom? Indeed, it's accurate. According to actress Dee Wallace, who portrayed the family elder Mary, she recently revealed this overlooked storyline element during an interview. Still Here Hollywood podcast, via Comic Book . Here is her statement:

There’s an entire subplot in E.T. Regarding E.T.'s infatuation with Mary, some elements remained in the final version. One scene had him entering to place Reese's Pieces on my nightstand while I slept. However, Spielberg preferred the sheet to be slightly lower than what I felt comfortable with for a family movie. After voicing my concerns about it being inappropriate for such an audience, we reached a compromise: The sheet ended up nearly at my shoulders, which suited me fine.

So, E.T. and Mary didn't really have an affair or anything of that sort. There were never any such bizarre scenarios implied. However, at some point, it seemed clear that E.T. might have developed feelings for Elliott's mother. This could have felt odd because the movie depicts E.T. more as another kid than an adult. While children can certainly develop infatuations with adults, including this angle would have likely diverted attention away from the main storyline. His primary connection with Elliot, Gertie, and Michael.

Dee Wallace made a valid point asking for its removal from the final edit. Nonetheless, watching the film with this knowledge changes your perspective entirely, as it reveals that E.T. seems interested in a human woman. Viewers, '80s cinema occasionally ventured into bizarre territory. Perhaps that's what makes these films so endearing to us even today.
