Don't Miss This! Stunning Meteor Sighting Captured on Dashcam in Eastern Idaho
ILLUMINATING THE HEAVENS — Clips posted online during the weekend showing a radiant beam streaking through the sky caught the interest of residents from both Idaho and Utah.
The National Weather Service office in Pocatello, Idaho, posted on their Facebook page A dashboard camera footage recorded on May 3, 2025. The clip was attributed to Jared Tate from Idaho Falls.
The video depicts a sudden luminous object in the sky that materializes abruptly. This entity moves rapidly downwards before vanishing from sight. According to the National Weather Service, this phenomenon captured on film is identified as a meteor.
“Meteors and fireballs are caused by space rocks (meteoroids) entering Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, heating up from friction and glowing, sometimes brightly enough to create a fireball,” the Facebook caption reads.
Commenters on the video said they also saw a meteor that same night — whether it was the same meteor or not is not clear — in places such as Tetonia, near Birch Creek, Blackfoot and Hailey.
It’s unclear exactly where the meteor landed, which was captured on Tate’s dashboard camera; however, residents in Ogden, Utah, were affected. speculating that night that a meteorite struck there.
KUTV said A "possible meteorite" was observed "descending towards Weber County," with sightings beginning around 9:30 p.m. on May 3, 2025.
