Bush Plans to Boycott Melania Trump's White House Event

A prominent figure from the Bush clan has boycotted an event organized by Melania Trump to honor the deceased Barbara Bush, choosing not to be present at the ceremony she hosted.

Former President George W. Bush is not expected to attend a Thursday event at the White House’s East Room for the unveiling of a U.S. Postal Service stamp dedicated to his late mother, two unnamed officials told The Washington Post .

Dorothy Bush Koch, who is the younger sibling of the ex-president, appears on the list provided by Trump’s office as one of multiple keynote speakers for the occasion. Additionally, Alice Yates, serving as the CEO of the George and Barbara Bush Foundation, plans to be present at the gathering.

Though Bush attended both of President Donald Trump’s inaugurations, he did not endorse Trump in his three presidential runs.

In a 2021 event Marking twenty years since the 9/11 attacks, Bush regretted that "much of our politics has turned into an open appeal to anger, fear, and resentment."

It seemed Trump interpreted those remarks as a slight directed at him, and subsequently stated that Bush "presided over a failed and lackluster administration" and added that "he shouldn't be giving advice to anyone!"

Trump had a testy history even with Barbara Bush herself.

In the 2019 book The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Creation of a Dynasty , Barbara calls Trump “a symbol of greed.”

The book also disclosed that several months prior to her death in 2018, Barbara stated she no longer identified as a Republican even though she had been one of the party’s most prominent figures.

"I've been told that she was rude to me, which she has every right to be considering what I did to her sons," said Trump. said in 2019 , alluding to former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. "She's the mother of someone whom I competed against. Many believed he would come out victorious, but he didn't last long. I put significant pressure on him in South Carolina."

A representative for Bush did not reply to requests for commentary made by The Post .
