Wheeling City Council approves $600,000 for road improvements

The Wheeling City Council has greenlit more than $600,000 for road resurfacing and paving initiatives throughout the city’s six districts. This move is a component of their continuous endeavor to upgrade the municipality's infrastructure.

Mayor Denny Magruder stated, "We believe our infrastructure holds significant importance, which is why we aim to carry forward the excellent progress initiated and maintain this effort annually. By focusing on a specific number of streets each year, we prevent reaching a situation where a major disaster becomes inevitable."

Along with enhancements to roads, the council talked about implementing a new steel rigging system for WesBanco Arena; however, they did not take a vote on this matter. Magruder, who has a background working at the arena, stressed how crucial this improvement is for ensuring safety.

“OSHA has modified certain regulations, and now performers who wish to enter and install their setups or position spotlights must use a new rigging system,” he explained. “The development of this system has been ongoing for quite some time, and I’m pleased to announce that we’re finally nearing completion.”

The council also discussed the advancement of the downtown streetscape initiative, anticipated to wrap up in autumn. Magruder urged locals to check out Main and Fourteenth Streets to observe the efforts contributed by volunteers.

“I’d simply want to direct everyone’s attention towards driving past Main and Fourteenth streets outside of River City, if they haven’t already witnessed it,” he stated. “The effort put in by the volunteers should provide a glimpse of what can be anticipated throughout the town once we’re finished.”
