UC Berkeley Student Left Paralyzed After Frat Party Accident

A University of California, Berkeley student who was mere weeks from graduation ended up paralyzed from the chest down following a recent accident during a fraternity gathering at the college.

Bandna Bhatti's family told KTVU On April 19, Bhatti tumbled down some stairs at Phi Kappa Tau on Piedmont Avenue. She was discovered 15 minutes afterward but wasn’t aware of the severity of her injuries; emergency services were contacted seven hours later.

Bhatti, who is 21 years old, has paralysis below the waist and suffers from a spinal fracture as well as a brain hematoma. according to a GoFundMe set up to cover her medical expenses.

"The injuries sustained are not just transformative but necessitate comprehensive and continuous medical attention, encompassing physical therapy, rehabilitation, and tailored assistance to aid her in navigating this new phase," the webpage stated.

According to the GoFundMe page, Bhatti was just three weeks shy of completing his degree in data science at the university.

“The fundraiser mentioned, ‘Bandna is an exceptionally talented, empathetic, and strong young woman who has devoted herself completely to achieving her aspirations. However, she now confronts a challenging journey forward.’”

A representative from the university informed KRON4 that the Berkeley Police Department is looking into the incident.

According to the statement, UC Berkeley has acknowledged an active law enforcement inquiry into allegations of a student getting hurt close to or inside a fraternity. The university’s sympathies are extended to the affected student, their family, beloved ones, and friends during this difficult period.
