'That's Not How It Works Online': Bill to Enable Public Comments on Government Social Media Fails

AUGUSTA, Maine – Legislation designed to stop governmental social media accounts from restricting user comments has been halted at the State House. At present, posts with commentary are prohibited on forums such as the Secretary of State’s Facebook page. According to Secretary Shenna Bellows, this restriction exists primarily due to insufficient personnel available to oversee and manage false information and abusive remarks.

The supporters of the legislation contended that the government ought not to curb freedom of expression. Nevertheless, during a committee hearing, the primary sponsor of the bill admitted to certain constraints within the proposal. Representative David Boyer, a Republican from Poland, stated, “My intention was that input from the public holds merit; however, I regret how some individuals spoil it for others… yet, such is life online.”

The committee members all agreed with each other in rejecting the bill.
