Rugby-Australia scrumhalf Gordon signs on for two more years

SYDNEY (News In A Day) – Scrumhalf Jake Gordon announced on Wednesday his decision to turn down substantial overseas contracts and pledge his commitment to Australian rugby all the way until after the 2027 World Cup alongside several other Wallabies players.

Gordon, who received proposals from clubs in France, England, and Japan, expressed excitement about the opportunity to compete against the British & Irish Lions this July and August, along with playing in his first World Cup on home ground.

“I believe 2024 was my finest year with the Wallabies, and I’m eager to keep improving and showcasing my skills as we approach significant upcoming events on our home turf—the Lions Series and the Rugby World Cup,” he stated in a Rugby Australia release.

The 31-year-old played in nine Test matches last season and appears set to compete with Tate McDermott for the number nine jersey in the three upcoming Tests against the Lions.

Gordon will keep playing Super Rugby for the New South Wales Waratahs, the Sydney-based team he has led since early 2021.

"I am highly confident about the path the Waratahs are taking, and I remain committed to working diligently to help achieve the team’s goals," he stated.

Gordon is set to come back from a knee injury when the Waratahs play on Saturday, aiming to keep their perfect home record intact this season and revive their chances of making the playoffs against the ACT Brumbies.

The Wallabies players Len Ikitau, Fraser McReight, Nick Frost, Harry Wilson, Jeremy Williams, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Matt Philip, Isaac Kailea, and Lachlan Lonergan have all recently extended their contracts with Rugby Australia (RA).

"(Jake) is someone who works hard and drives standards, and there's no doubt his experience at both state and international level will be important moving forward," said Peter Horne, RA's director of high performance.
