REAL ID Deadline Tomorrow: What You Need to Know

Beginning Wednesday, you'll require either a REAL ID or a passport for domestic flights, and currently, securing an appointment at the RMV is quite challenging.

James Bocock finally obtained his REAL ID at the RMV office in Braintree on the final day before the deadline.

"It was quite challenging. For several consecutive days, I attempted to join, usually around 9 a.m., but frequently by the time I tried to sign up, which was sometimes only five or ten minutes later, slots had already been filled," explained Bocock.

He says his wife had to drive well over an hour away to an RMV with a free appointment to get that REAL ID.

They’re in a rush, since they’re traveling to Disney in a few weeks.

"My spouse and I have a young daughter, and our aim is for her world to remain as smooth and carefree as possible," stated Bocock.

The Department of Homeland Security states that even without a REAL ID, you can still board planes for the time being.

"What will occur tomorrow is that individuals will go through the queue, present their identification, and if it isn’t up to standard, they might be redirected to another line where they’ll undergo additional checks but still be permitted to board their flights," stated Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary.

Secretary Noem states that they anticipate minimal delays because over 80 percent of travelers possess IDs that comply with the updated regulations, which could be either a REAL ID or a passport.

"We aim to achieve this with minimal disruption to operations," stated Dan Velez, the TSA New England spokesperson.

According to the TSA, if you do not possess a REAL ID, you will need to undergo additional scrutiny and be subject to further inspection.

“If you don’t have a REAL ID or a REAL ID compliant ID, we do suggest you get to the airport quite a bit earlier than you normally do,” said Velez.

You’ll also need a REAL ID to enter any federal buildings starting Wednesday.
