This year’s longer route paid tribute to the members of the New York National Guard who lost their lives. died when their helicopter crashed In March 2024 along the Texas/Mexico border.
“It’s a different feel this year. The support like my daughter was talking about, it was wonderful,” said Judith Grassia, John Michael Grassia III’s mother.
The special day began at Riverfront Park in the City of Rensselaer. Carry the Load’s Memorial May relay and the marchers wound their way through the city on a six-mile route accompanied by their newly decked-out bus with the images of John Michael Grassia III and Casey Frankoski adorning the side. “When they told us they were going to do the national campaign with our children. Just tears. Just tears, very emotional,” said Judith.
The initial destination on the new route was the Jr./Sr. High School. "It was incredible watching how enthusiastically the children participated. Seeing these young students getting involved really highlights our mission. After all, Casey and John dedicated their lives to this nation. In her yearbook, Casey wrote that your aspirations lie beyond your fears. Therefore, chase after your goals without letting fear obstruct you," explained Jim Frankoski, father of Casey Frankoski.
The following destination was a bridge commemorating Casey, now featuring new signs. Afterward, they circled around Casey’s neighborhood. Following their visit to the Frankoski residence, the gathering returned to Riverfront Park for a ceremony honoring the brave souls lost. "As parents of one of the city's Hometown Heroes, we deeply appreciate how these occasions ensure the memory of our departed remains vibrant," stated Kenny Pratt, father of Jacob Pratt, who several attendees knew sustained critical injuries during an incident where John and Casey tragically passed away. "We also aim to maintain awareness and provide assistance for those still with us but affected similarly."
Casey's mother, Jill Frankoski, shared, "We completed the walk. Initially, it was quite emotionally charged, but with the entire community—our friends, family, along with the fire and police departments supporting us—it turned into an amazing experience." She further expressed her gratitude: "A big thanks goes out to everyone involved in making this possible for our families today. Having such a supportive community truly makes all the difference; we feel incredibly fortunate."
Carry the Load stated they will return. "When you consider the community and the individuals present here, I had the opportunity to connect with so many folks. Look at them; observe their attire, such as their shirts and bibs. This embodies what true community means, and if this doesn't resonate with someone, perhaps they should reconsider their place in life," explained David Lindsey, who serves on Carry the Load’s National Event Squad.
This year, the families have been invited to participate in one of the region's largest Memorial Day celebrations. "We'll attend the Albany parade as representatives for John and Casey, who will serve as the Grand Marshals," explained Jim Frankoski.
