Lancaster County Celebrates Its 296th Birthday!

Lancaster County is marking its 296th anniversary.
In 1728, settlers dwelling in the remote parts of Chester County voiced their concerns about an influx of "thieves, vagabonds, and undesirables," prompting them to request the establishment of a separate county. They were also troubled by having to cover long distances just to get to the courthouse.

It was the fourth county established following Bucks, Chester, and Philadelphia counties.
The initial commissioners in Lancaster County called upon numerous people to help set up the early governance structures.
There was no courthouse at first, so sessions were initially held in a tavern near the Susquehanna River that was owned by John Postlewaite.
The county was also without a jail. Sheriff Robert Barber built the first one in 1730 at his home.
In order to appropriately divide Lancaster County from Chester County, a surveyor named John Taylor was compensated with three pounds for his work on "establishing the boundary line."
The location known today as Penn Square was selected for the construction of the initial courthouse, which was completed in 1738.
