Harman Acquires Bowers & Wilkins, Marantz, and Denon as Masimo Exits Consumer Audio Sector

Harman International has signed a definite agreement to take over Masimo's consumer audio unit before the year ends.
The approved $350 million cash deal, which includes some modifications, will result in the Samsung-controlled entity acquiring renowned audio brands such as Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, and Marantz, along with Polk Audio, Definitive Technology, Classe, HEOS, and Boston Acoustics. This acquisition will broaden their comprehensive collection of audio-visual products significantly.
Since being acquired by Samsung Electronics in 2016, Harman has already taken control of major audiovisual brands like Arcam, AKG, JBL, Mark Levinson, and Revel.
Samsung says it plans to add Masimo's brands to strengthen its global leading position in the consumer audio market, which is expected to grow from $60.8bn this year to $70bn in 2029.
"This purchase marks a significant move towards advancing Harman’s central audio business and increasing its presence in crucial market segments including Home Audio, Headphones, High-Fidelity Components, and Automotive Sound Systems," states Dave Rogers, who leads Harman's Lifestyle unit.
Rooted in a common history of pioneering advancements and superior quality in sound technology, this unified group of brands, along with the skilled workforce from both organizations, aims to provide complementary audio solutions, bolster our offering’s appeal, and present greater options for customers.
Only three years ago, US medical company Masimo acquired those eight audio brands from high-end audio business Sound United for $1.025bn, although for over a year the writing was on the wall that it was looking to sell them on.
In 2020, Sound United also took over Bowers & Wilkins, which means this British speaker brand has had quite a journey within just the last half-decade — yet, despite these changes, their product quality seems undiminished. Their speakers and headphones continue to excel remarkably when balancing performance against value for money.
What impact will this sale have on customers? At present, probably very little. We've contacted both our Masimo and Harman representatives to seek further clarification during these initial stages.
