Dodgers Stumble in Extra Innings Against the Marlins
The Dodgers managed to stay competitive against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, but ultimately fell short in dramatic fashion with a final score of 5-4 in 10 innings.
Tony Gonsolin started for the third time in a row against the Marlins since August 18, 2023, and he struck out the first six batters consecutively with only 21 pitches thrown.
Andy Pages got his initial opportunity to bat in the upper part of the Dodgers' order, and he promptly made an impact with a resounding double down the line against Cal Quantrill during the top of the first inning. Freddie Freeman then brought him home with a base hit, giving the Dodgers an early lead.
The rising star Dane Myers hit a leading-off single against Gonsolin during the bottom of the third inning, providing Miami with their initial runner on base. In the following at-bat, Liam Hicks struck a 1-1 fastball towards deep right field; however, Pages made an impressive leap to snag what would have been a home run, subsequently doubling off Myers who was returning to first base after a throw clocked at 98.5 miles per hour.
The Dodgers were unable to repeat their offensive romp of Quantrill in their previous series, as he rebounded to go five strong innings of one run ball while striking out six. Gonsolin was headed for another dominant start after four shutout innings before Hicks got his revenge with a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, giving Miami their first lead of the series.
Gonsolin, along with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, becomes only the second Dodgers pitcher this season to achieve at least eight strikeouts in two consecutive starts.
Shohei Ohtani swiftly ensured that Gonsolin wouldn’t face consequences for the evening, driving the initial pitch from Anthony Veneziano deep into the second deck to even the score—a feat accomplished with one of his six home runs across just five recent games at loanDepot Park. With this performance, Ohtani has become the premier player this season to amass both 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases during the year.
Freddie Freeman continues to haunt the Marlins, as he smacked his second home run in as many games to give the Dodgers the lead right back. His 42 home runs are the most against Miami by any opposing player.
The Marlins took the lead right back in the bottom half of the sixth inning, as Connor Norby collected an RBI double followed by Dane Myers putting Miami back in front with an RBI single off of Luis GarcÃa.
The Dodgers had the tying run at first base after James Outman walk in the top of the seventh inning, and after Hyeseong Kim reached on a fielder’s choice, Ohtani lined a game-tying RBI double that brought home the speedy Kim all the way from first base.
The Marlins put the bases loaded against Anthony Banda in the bottom of the eighth inning, putting Myers to the plate once again against the left-hander. Instead of going deep to give the Marlins the lead, Myers lined a sharp ground ball to Max Muncy, converting the rare 5-2-3 double play to preserve the tie.
Neither team managed to score in the ninth frame, resulting in the Dodgers' second extended innings match-up with Miami within their past eight contests. The Dodgers had runners on base with just one out left when it came down to Will Smith at bat; however, he hit into a game-ending double play, thus providing Miami the opportunity to win in dramatic fashion.
J.P. Feyereisen made his first appearance back with the Dodgers, and after putting the reigning NL Player of the Week Kyle Stowers on intentionally, he allowed two straight singles to AgustÃn RamÃrez and Jesús Sánchez, the latter of which snapped the Dodgers chances at a season sweep of Miami.
