Braves Rally to Edge Reds in Exciting 10-Inning Clash
Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th frame, securing a 2-1 victory for the host Atlanta Braves against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.
With baserunners on first and second, Ozuna drove a line drive into left field off relief pitcher Lyon Richardson (0-1). Richardson had been called up from Triple-A Louisville earlier that same day. This hit brought home the automatic runner Alex Verdugo without requiring a throw.
Raisel Iglesias (2-2) served as the winning pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.
The victory marked Atlanta’s third consecutive win and the Cincinnati Reds’ fourth successive defeat. Atlanta had secured victories in the initial two matches of the four-game series.
Each team managed to score one run in the ninth inning.
Santiago Espinal shattered the scoreless deadlock with an RBI hit against reliever Daysbel Hernandez, allowing Elly De La Cruz to cross home plate after he had advanced from first to second following his initial single. This achievement came right after Espinal put an end to a no-hitter during the eighth frame on Monday, further extending his consecutive game hitting streak to seven matches.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Braves evened the score against closer Emilio Pagan. After Sean Murphy drew a walk, pinch-runner Stuart Fairchild crossed home plate when Michael Harris II hit a line drive double into right field, tying up the game.
The Cincinnati pitcher, Andrew Abbott, threw five innings without allowing any runs. During this game, he gave up only four hits, did not walk anyone, and recorded eight strikeouts in his initial appearance as a starter against the Braves.
The Atlanta pitcher, Chris Sale, completed 6 2/3 scoreless innings during his 300th career start. In this outing, he gave up five hits, walked two batters, and recorded 10 strikeouts for the consecutive game.
Each squad squandered chances to score earlier in the match.
The Red team had several decent opportunities to score. In the first inning, they had players positioned at second and third base with only one player out but were unable to get them home. Additionally, Austin Wynns started the seventh inning with a double that hit the top of the wall in left field, yet Cincinnati also missed their chance here.
In the seventh inning, when the Braves had runners on first and third with no outs as well as the bases loaded with two outs, they were unable to put runs on the board.
The Reds said Tyler Callihan broke two bones in his left forearm on Monday when he crashed into the sidewall down the left field line. Callihan underwent surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss at least two months.
