Alabama DC Believes Bray Hubbard Has Elevated His Game to New Heights
Bray Hubbard started the final six games of Alabama’s 2024 campaign after a season-ending injury to Keon Sabb , and the former was one of the Crimson Tide’s most productive players.
Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack I saw Hubbard, who was a sophomore last year, make significant progress as he took over directing Alabama’s defense for his first season.
“We really challenged Bray in the offseason a year ago, in the springtime,” said Wommack on Tuesday night at the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet, via AL.com He had an average spring, but during the fall camp, he performed slightly better. Once his name was announced as our starting player, he stepped up with remarkable performance.
Last year, Hubbard participated in all 13 of Alabama’s games, but his playing time significantly increased during the latter part of the 2024 season. By the end of his sophomore year with the Tide, he concluded with 57 tackles, ranking him fifth among defenders on the team. Additionally, he recorded three interceptions, broke up two passes, and caused one fumble. His interception count matched Zabien Brown's, leading both as co-leaders on the team.
With Malachi Moore exhausting his eligibility, Hubbard and Sabb are likely to be Alabama’s top two safeties this fall. As stated by Pro Football Focus The safety from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, ranks as the sixth-best among returnees at his position in college football before the start of the new season.
On Tuesday night, Wommack highlighted Hubbard's impressive ball-hawking skills during the previous season. Set to start Game 1 in 2025, Hubbard appears ready for a breakthrough performance.
“I think he’s taken his game to another level this offseason, just in terms of the leadership that he carries and brings,” Wommack said of Hubbard. “This was a multi-sport, multi-position football player/athlete coming out of high school, and he has really settled into the nuances that make a great free safety. And then all of a sudden, you change systems, and he’s adapted really well to that.
Bray is a productive player who has the ability to create opportunities for our team. I'm genuinely enthusiastic about seeing what he will accomplish this season.
